Exterior Painting Preparation Steps
- Power wash to remove dust, dirt, cobwebs, debris, and mildew.
- Survey entire job site for preparation, including scraping, sanding, caulking, priming, etc.
- Remove or cover any items near the exterior.
- Verify the type of paint that was used previously to determine the type of preparation and primers required to ensure the best adhesion.
- Fully sand all entrance doors, fill holes, and prime bare wood.
- Fill all significant cracks in paint or holes in stucco with a suitable patching compound.
- Check for water damage or leakage, and seal any stains (if present) to prevent bleeding through the finish coat of paint.
- Caulk cracks around casings, windows, and doors.
- Mask fixtures, or, if requested, remove and replace fixtures. Also mask window openings, door openings, concrete, etc. to avoid overspray and paint splatters.
- Cover plants with cloth sheets.
